Large Beet

OK, so this is one of those "weird posts" I do every now and then. ;) But my Mom was pretty proud of this gigantic beet, (which she grew,) that was harvested from our garden, so I decided to post a picture for her. We normally don't let the beets in our garden grow big, but we somehow missed this one.

Mom, holding the beet.

The large beet next to a peach. (For scaling reference.)

Hopefully it tastes as good as it looks! :)

Ummm, I love beets! We didn't plant any this year because we canned so many last year! :)

When I was a little girl, I had my own small vegetable garden. I grew several different veggies, with one being radishes. I didn't know that 'bigger' wasn't necessarily 'better'. I let my radishes grow as big as they could be (on purpose!). I picked them finally - I believe they were about the size of your beet there - and brought them into the house. Instead of washing them and putting them in the fridge like I should have, I simply placed them in the sink for my mother to do the dirty work. I went out to play. When I came back in the house an hour or so later, I found my mother BOILING my radishes on the stove -- she thought they were BEETS! Oops. Lesson learned - always clean up after yourself and don't leave your work for someone else to do!
